In plain English
What does press kit mean?
A press kit is the set of supporting materials that travels with an announcement: the release itself, high-resolution images, executive headshots, logos, factsheets, product specifications, and contact details. It exists so a reporter can publish a complete story without emailing you for one more file.
A press kit is built around a single moment, such as a launch, funding round, or event. A media kit is broader and usually lives on your website all year. Most teams host the press kit on a shareable link or in the online newsroom and update it as soon as details change.
Example
Press kit: Acme Robotics Series B - Full release (PDF and Word) - Product photos, 3000px, print ready - CEO headshot and 80-word bio - One-page factsheet: funding, headcount, customers - Media contact: press@acmerobotics.com, +1 415 555 0134
Use it well
Three practical tips
- 01
Name files clearly, such as acme-ceo-headshot.jpg, so an editor can drop them straight into a CMS.
- 02
Include usage rights in writing so a picture desk does not have to ask.
- 03
Keep one live link and update it, rather than mailing new versions of the same folder.
