Domain Rating

A third-party SEO score estimating the relative strength of a website’s backlink profile.

What does domain rating mean?

Domain Rating, commonly abbreviated DR, is an SEO metric created by Ahrefs that scores the relative strength of a website’s backlink profile on a scale from 0 to 100. A higher score generally means the domain has links from more authoritative and diverse websites.

DR is useful for comparison, but it is not a Google ranking factor and does not measure editorial quality, audience relevance, traffic, or the value of a specific page. Other SEO tools use similar proprietary metrics with different names and calculations.

Example

The team compared Domain Rating alongside audience fit and traffic rather than choosing an outlet from DR alone.

Three practical tips

  1. 01

Treat DR as one comparison signal, not proof of quality or ranking power.

  2. 02

Compare scores from the same SEO tool because different tools calculate authority differently.

  3. 03

Check relevance, traffic, and editorial standards alongside the score.
