Syndication

The process of a press release being republished across multiple news outlets and websites.

What does syndication mean?

Syndication happens when a press release, once distributed through a wire service or newswire, gets automatically picked up and republished by partner news sites, aggregators, and search engines without additional editorial work from the sender. This amplifies reach far beyond the outlets directly pitched.

Syndication is largely mechanical, driven by content-sharing agreements between the wire service and hundreds or thousands of media sites, rather than a reporter choosing the story. It's valuable for SEO and visibility, but syndicated placements carry less credibility than earned coverage written independently by a journalist.

Example

Within an hour of distribution, the release was syndicated to over 300 outlets including Yahoo Finance and MarketWatch.

Three practical tips

  1. 01

Don't count syndicated pickups as equivalent to earned media coverage in reporting to clients.

  2. 02

Optimize headlines and keywords since syndication drives SEO value.

  3. 03

Choose a wire service with strong syndication partners in your target industry.
